Hi, I purchased a 2002 td4 Auto just 12 weeks ago, 69K on the clock, going against all advice to steer clear of a Freelander because of their widely documented reliability issues - I am beginning to wish I'd listened to words of wisdom!

Anyway the latest fault appears to be a transmission problem. Lots of juddering then power loss, then engine revs high (3500rpm) like the clutch is slipping and then lack of power.

Had it taken to a Land Rover specialist and their diagnostic reported 4 fault codes within the transmission as follows:

PO 7050 inhibitor switch or something
P 1605 (Didn't get detail of this one)
PO 733 3rd gear ratio out of range
PO 753 5th gear ratio out of range

They claim the auto box is knackered and it needs a new one. I'm not convinced, and think they're going for the most expensive repair first. After reading a few reports on forums could it be something much less sinister? I'm no mechanic but could anyone suggest what I should perhaps look at first before facing a mammoth bill for a new gearbox? I have read that a faulty solenoid could be the cause of these symtoms????

I don't know when the transmission fluid was changed last, is it worth changing this first?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated,

Thanks, Gary

Just an update with more info

Codes are:

P0705 Inhibitor switch input multiple signal or no signal
P0733 3rd gear ratio out of range
P0735 5th gear ratio out of range

plus another one I need to verify with the LR specialist tomorrow.

The car has been feeling sluggish ever since a recent fuel pump replacement (one under the bonnet) and fuel economy has been poor too. Because of this I was heading towards replacing the MAF sensor before the problem got so bad (juddering, lack of power, over-revving then coming to a stop without stalling) that I had to be towed, and then diagnosed with the above codes.

I've been reading tonight that a bad MAF sensor can play havoc with an auto box and throw up codes not unlike the ones above.

Has anyone experienced this at all? Could I just disconnect the MAF and see how it drives?

Cheers

Generic fault codes are open to interpretation.......

P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction (PRNDL Input)

This is suggesting an electrical fault so check/clean all the multiplug connections and wiring harness to the gearbox.

P0733 Gear 3 Incorrect Ratio
P0735 Gear 5 Incorrect Ratio

These appear to simply say that the gearbox has been in the wrong gear and could easily be because of the electrical issue.

p 1605 is a manufacturer specific code,
found this on-line....Land Rover: Internal EEPROM fault/General fault.

It's a bit vague but could also be due to poor electrical connections and may well clear along with the others if it turns out to be electrical.

Many thanks for your input guys, all informative and useful. Today I replaced the MAF sensor (Bosch original) but made no difference with regards the transmission issue, so think that was a red herring although the engine seems to run better!. Clutch starts to slip after only a short distance and then there's no forward drive whatsoever until the car has been switched off for 5 mins or so and then restarted, then will go another few hunderd yards before increasing clutch slippage once more the nothing. Reverse engages fine though.

Will get it to a gearbox specialist tomorrow and ask them to do a check on all electrical inputs given the nature of the fault codes - thanks Chaser

If indeed a new box is the ultimate verdict, any suggestions on which is the most economical way to go on the basis I may just now part X it for something Japanese and reliable again (boy I miss my old Rav4)!

Cheers

Gary

Had the gearbox looked at by a specialist and confirmed that as there was no forward drive but reverse was working OK the 'A' clutch was knackered and therefore needed a replacement box. He advised getting one from LR as he said that although you order a recon exchange unit, 9 times out of 10 they send a brand new one anyhow. Sounds good then? But LR quoted £1,375 + VAT but can't get one for over 3 weeks! Ashcroft Transmissions can get one in about 3 days for £925 +VAT so think will go that route as warranties are the same length (12 months) and I'm not thinking of keeping the sodding thing too long now!

Thanks for your feedback.
