Hi, I purchased a 2002 td4 Auto just 12 weeks ago, 69K on the clock, going against all advice to steer clear of a Freelander because of their widely documented reliability issues - I am beginning to wish I'd listened to words of wisdom!
Anyway the latest fault appears to be a transmission problem. Lots of juddering then power loss, then engine revs high (3500rpm) like the clutch is slipping and then lack of power.
Had it taken to a Land Rover specialist and their diagnostic reported 4 fault codes within the transmission as follows:
PO 7050 inhibitor switch or something
P 1605 (Didn't get detail of this one)
PO 733 3rd gear ratio out of range
PO 753 5th gear ratio out of range
They claim the auto box is knackered and it needs a new one. I'm not convinced, and think they're going for the most expensive repair first. After reading a few reports on forums could it be something much less sinister? I'm no mechanic but could anyone suggest what I should perhaps look at first before facing a mammoth bill for a new gearbox? I have read that a faulty solenoid could be the cause of these symtoms????
I don't know when the transmission fluid was changed last, is it worth changing this first?
Any help would be MUCH appreciated,
Thanks, Gary
