Does anyone have the official spec of the original n402 jatco auto oil? I've never been able to find it online. It traces back to texaco then to chevron but never found a datasheet or whatever they produce. Been reading about spec's on engine oil recently and would love to know similar about the Jatco stuff.

fond memories of hippo ownership eh?

Thanks. I've seen that stuff before and know a number on ere who have used it. I was hoping for a content list of what's in n402. Like it's got eggstra chemical A to help reduce friction, chemical B to aid cleaning, chemical C to lock in dirt to stop it sticking etc (before it gets trapped int filter). I would also like to know what jatco spec as a must. For eggsample it must comply with these features/benefits to be suitable for the Jatco int FL1's: can run 100m in under 10 seconds and knows it's 11 times table... or whatever the manufacturer stipulates. Spent a number of hours reading about engine oil recently and it's quite an involved topic.

u need to get out more , lol

i think i may have seen that , will even try and find it for u ;):D

do u want me to dig more to try and find more info or is that enough
Keep going if yer like. I have to admit it's been a year since searching for this. You may put something in different to me and get different results.

just went through some of my old links and they arnt there any more

know when i searched , i tried things like n402 viscosity, as i was wanted to compare it with the alternative oils

also used millers in the jatco and that wasn’t bad either , but found the ravenol the smoothest on gear changes

don’t quote me but i think it came out 0-20w , but might be on the completely wrong track

these were some of the other numbers that i had in my links

Texaco ATF N402, ETL-7045E, ETL-8072

plus just remembered, i’m sure i still have both jatco rebuild workshop books, bought them from a company in sussex who rebuild the jatco boxes and when mine was juddering i went down there and bought the manuals

will try and find them and see if there’s any more details in there for u

no worries, will dig them out in the week and can then easily take a pic of any info that may be useful

speak later :)

Yep I've seen this carlube stuff and would be my 2nd choice after n402 but strange how Carlube now don't list this spec on new bottles or even on there website
Although ATF-U no longer shows as an N402 equivalent for the FL1 Jatco box. ATF-U still shows Esso LT 71141 and Ford Mercon V, both of which are suitable for the Jatco box when fitted to a Jaguar X type. So I'm more than happy to use ATF-U, knowing it well exceeds the original LR stuff.

i remember u had some really good results with that oil , when we discussed different oils a good while back

went down to a company in sussex who rebuilds the jatco gearbox and they also said exactly same as u with it being a suitable oil :):)

Fuchs 4400, Havoline Transmax, Castrol Multi vehicle, list as N402 equivalants too, but they are the same price if not more expensive than the landrover stuff.
Does anyone know if the freelander is the only 4x4 that used this Jatco box, all I can find is FWD vehicles.

Yes. But the box is a FWD box, modified to take the IRD. So anything to do with the box is relevant, regardless of FWD 4WD. ;)

More load on a FWD box made to take 4 wheels offroad... more load on oil.:)
The IRD is on the output of the box, so the actual torque the box taking is not much different from the FWD counterpart. The FL1 box has an IRD which lowers the torque seen by the boxes output shaft by ~30%.
The Jatco 506E is designed to take 300Nm of engine torque, which is ample for the job in hand.
