Hi All
I wonder if anyone can help.
Every day when I go out to use my Landy I start up, select gear (auto) rev accelerator but nothing happens, no acceleration or revving noise from engine. I sit there pumping up and down accelerator pedal and all of a sudden I feel the engine engage and I'm ok again. It doesn't happen during the day only first thing or if has been sat a day or two.
In the last year I have had a new fuel filter and MAF sensor fitted albeit by different garages as each just charge a fortune and I'm not to sure what they are telling me.

Any ideas what is making this happen?
Many Thanks

If its doing absolutely nothing when the peddle is pressed - it could be the throttle position sensor - I'm suprised it would make such a drastic transformation from not working at all to fully working though.

As often, I'd plug in diagnostics. See if there's any codes. You can also see if its the TPS because I'm sure that should give a reading in the real time data.

is it a td4 ?? ..

slightly confused ..
your foot is off the go pedal when you start it ..
engine starts ..
then further use of the go pedal results in no response from engine ?
just sits there 'n idles ? ..
then all of a sudden it responds .. ..
?????????????????????????

oooops :-/

watching tense tv show .. 'n switching to LZ in the quiet bits ..
skimming too fast ..

imagining someone pump the go pedal while starting up a diesel has me shock

end excuses for not paying attention ..

Only problem I would have there is, is once I got to a garage it would be fine as it only happens first thing when I use it in the day after being sat all night say. It's really strange, starts no problem, engage gear, press down on throttle and nothing whatsoever for a minute or two and then engages and moves! I did think once that the brakes were sized on but there is no revving noise coming from the engine either? Really weird.

Yes foot is off accelerator upon starting. It's when I select gear and want to move by pressing down in pedal and absolurtely nothing happens and then a few moments later it responds! It only ever happens 1st thing of a new day irrespective of the time of day i.e left overnight until the afternoon of the following day or first thing in the morning!

does it rev in neutral ( whatever the auto box equivalent is ) .. ?
just wondering if it's an auto-box thing .. going by some of the oddities reported by some auto-box owners
like not letting the engine 'engage' 'till something is 'right' with the auto gear box ..
something to do with the transmission ecu ..
i.e. like there's not enough tranny oil pressure .. or similar ..
or a solenoid hasn't 'switched' ..

as like when the engine goes into limp mode to avoid damaging something ..
when fuel pressure drops to the hp pump .. or turbo boost goes beyond safe limits etc etc.
( safety measures defined by the ecu responding to sensors input )

hoping some auto-box expert will visit 'n say yes or no ..

Sounds like the tcm (auto box ecu) isn't sending a signal to the solenoid to engage. This could be a weak signal or voltage leak, or the tcm is on its way out. The reason it works OK after is the solenoid is charged but when left standing that charge drops off. A second hand tcm is about £50 from the bay of E (search freelander ecu, look for the jacto one) , try and get one from the same year. But best to have it plugged in to a diagnostic machine first as the tcm has its own fault codes. A standard obd2 won't read this, you need a full system obd or a garage that specialises in transmission problems. Cheers Mike

There's a couple of things to check here.
1st. Does the engine rev up in P or N? So basically, does the rev counter needle climb above 800Rpm when you press the accelerator down?
2nd. Does the gear indicator on the dash display the same as the light by the gear lever? Or is it showing F4?
3rd. Does the gearbox change smoothly once you can get it to move?

1 - Yes
2 - Yes
3 - Yes
I did as suggested Rev the engine first in P, and then selected gear and it moved first time. I though cracked it till I got in the next morning boasting to my wife and it just stayed still and went back to its old ways!! (Nothing to do with my wife mind).

And the next morning. Did it rev in P or did it do nothing?

No went out in it today - same problem (nothing) feels like accelerator pedal has been disengaged or something and then a couple of moments later it moves forward, slow to start with and then kicks in as normal.

If it's not revving in P or N then it's likely to be an engine issue. I'm guessing at the throttle potentiometer but a diagnostic when cold is the only way to be sure.
