Hi Guys,

I have a question......

How many miles is the td4 engine capable of, I am thinking of buying an 04 model but its allready done 105000, miles it does have a full service history though.

Thanks

some really high mileages on this forum, 150k plus, as ever, regular oil & filter changes (every 6000 miles), but the crucial one is the crankcase breather filter, as it never used to be listed on the service schedule by LR, it never got changed, but is more than capable of killing an engine dead.

Thanks mate,
Is the oil and filter job an easy one to do on the drive, or do you ned ramps etc?

Andy

the most awkward bit is getting the engine undertray off. will take about 20 mins first time you do it. after that, you will know where the bolts are, it is well documented on here. I find it easier to use wheel ramps when taking the tray off, then drop it down so it's level to do the oil change.

it is also conceivable to drill a hole in the under tray which allows access to the sump plug for oil changes without taking the tray off. again, there are details on here.

the oil change is not really any harder than any other car. You will need a 36mm socket to change the filter, as it is a paper element type in a plastic housing.

the only other thing to note is the 6.8 litre capacity. Doesn't always drain all the way out, but I usually find the capacity of oil coming out is more than the 5 litres capacity of some oil drainers, so check you drainer is big enough to take it.

good luck, welcome to the forum, you know where we are !!

Hi there,

Mine is a Td4 from 2005 and now has about 167.032km = 104.395 miles on it. Still great and without any problem. We drive as well on as off the road and we drive a few times a year with our 1600kg caravan to France or Italy. The Freelander does it without a problem. But as mentioned before regular normal maintenaince and I changed the cranckcase filter to the BMW part. I made an album of it in my profile.

Have fun with it.

One thing to be remembered is that (at least on my car) in order to be able to take the "cover" of the oilfilter out of the enginebay you have to release/remove the 10 mm screw on the tube which houses the oil dipstick so that you can "fold" this a little away to give room for the top of the filterhousing to come out. Good luck.

Sorry, but yesterday in error I put "airfilter" instead of "oilfilter".

Don't forget the egr will need replacing or a damn good clean at least - the sticky crap inside will surprise you! There's plenty of advice on here to show you and it's a well easy job :)
