TC, ABS and HDC all on

Hi,

Went through a _puddle_ this morning in my S2 2002 Disco. When I say puddle I mean the Vauxhall corsa in front of me went through it with water no higher than where the tyre meets the wheel at the bottom.

I go through it and the dash lights up like a Christmas tree and I get lots of warning chimes.

the TC, ABS and HDC lights are all on. A google search suggested very different things ranging from a new ECU at ~£1500 to new wheel hubs and sensors at ~£500.

Can driving through a 3" deep puddle really do this much damage???

I wouldn't mind but it the last 5 weeks the car has done nothing but break down with totally different faults costing me over £1500.

Is there any chance this problem could be cheap to fix? Last time I had warning lights on the dealer charged me £56 just to read the codes (which took him about 90 seconds) I'm getting paranoid now as to whether the car will even make it to work in the mornings.

Wouldn't trust the thing an inch offroad!!!

Also - is the car safe to drive like this? Or does it need to go back to being an ornament the garage?

I'm in the middle of a similar situation at the moment (common isn't it?). The ABS light will trigger the TC and HDC lights, as both those systems depend upon the ABS, so if the ABS spots a situation it's not happy with and flags an error, the other two systems domino behind it.

I've had the maintenance kit fitted to the ABS modulator (all of £35). This did highlight a demonstrably dud item, but the yellow lights kept coming back. The next session will be shaking all the connections (it 'feels' like an intermittent HR joint to me); if that doesn't work we're going for a known good 2nd-hand ABS modulator, and if that doesn't do it them we'll be down do individual wheel sensors, although we may swap those last two operations around.

Is it safe? Well, the ABS still works, even with the yellow light up. So I'm still using mine.

do a seach for the 'Three Amigos'

usually a dealer fix, to reset the faults on the SLABS ecu, but you can and should check the wheel sensors for tightness, cleanliness and contamination, also the wiring and the connections you will find inside the wing where it passes through. Wouldnt hurt to disconnect them and reconnect the connectors with vaseline or silicone grease in the plug.

i also have the same problem
it seems to go when the ignition is turned off (a bit difficult on the motorway)
but it also goes when you brake hard stationary and after a noise then resets i also would like to cure this as it is getting worse all the time any help would be great

Hi all I have developed the same problem with my 2000 disco 2 and been quoted £200 per sensor. The abs works so does the traction control but all the lights remain on. Any help out there ?

you need to get it to a garage and have the faults diagnosed or you can spend loads of money just guesing it could be a wheel senser at about £35 or a abs pump at about £1000 or just a bad conection spend the £30 (£10 for cash) or so and get it to the garage
dont go to the dealer for things like this thats why it cost £56 last time go to a local independ and hub assembilies are not £500 thaen are not cheep but jou can get them for less than £200 the dealers wont sell abs sensers but most auto factors and land rover parts places sell them

i live in the cardiff area does anyone know of a good garage to get the fault diagnostics done

both about the (£50) mark

Check for play in wheel bearings/hub though...

What actual codes are being logged ?

Never did see the codes - but a known good used ABS modulator has solved the problem. This has only cost me £110 with delivery and fitting, which is vastly better than the 'list price' of over £1,000. Well worth looking at eBay if anyone wants a new one, some dealers are selling them very much cheaper than that...

To all those that have the three amigos - the testbook (fault diagnosis machine) will cost about £35 to £70, so shop around. If the problem is an ABS sensor - they cost about £40 and are a piece of p*ss to do. If you go to a garage that do diagnostics and you have purchased the ABS sensor already - then you can fit the problem sensor there and then (wheel off etc about 45 mins to do) and they will then need to clear the fault again with the testbook - usually no fee for this. Do shop around though as testbook fees vary. Any further help then give me a shout.
