I have a Freelander 2 2011gs just wondering if anyone no’s how the 4x4 works eg is it a permanent 4x4 and does the terrain response automatically select the right terrain or do you have to do it manually

As I understand it the front wheels are always driven.
The rears are engaged by a automatic hydraulic clutch (Haldex coupling) that is built into the rear diff.
The rears are only engaged when the wheel sensors detect a slip.
Traction control puts the brake on whichever wheel is slipping so no need for diff locks.
The sensitivity is adjusted by the terrain response which also changes other things like the ABS so that they are best suited to the conditions you intend driving on.
It also affects your fuel consumption so best not just leave it in mud and snow.
Mine just seems to take care of itself except the ABS is too sensitive on ice in road setting so I put it in mud and snow on frosty days.
Hill decent is stunning on icy hill's.
Anyone more clued up please correct me if I'm wrong?

Apparently tractors are good at rock crawling but I don't want to drive a tractor

Curious , wonder why they didn’t include rock crawl, unless it’s because the suspension can’t be raised

Think it was a first for the freelander ref , HDC and discos D3 for the terrain response , @Hippo will know

Can’t remember off the top of my head but terrain response 2 I think came out around 2013 that has the auto setting

That's it exactly. The FL2 has spring suspension, so it's hight is fixed. The larger EAS LRs have Rock Crawl because selecting that puts the ride up to Rock Crawl hight.

Edit: TR Rock Crawl also puts the transfer box in low range, and locks the rear diff, if the rear locker is fitted.

Yer need a low box for rock crawl which the FL2 doesn't have so they don't provide the option of rock crawl TR.

Terrain response responds automatically as stv123 said above. Activates when needed. The buttons allow yer to choose an option in advance. Like driving along a river bed. Eye would select mud and ruts which puts it into permanent 4x4 in advance of needing it, rather than sensing slip then activating it. Handy when an obstacle needs it in advance like a slippy slope. It changes the response to the gas pedal and abs setup ter suit what yer select when choosing it manually.

When you first pull away it engages the haldex to reduce wheel spin then disengages it a moment layer. Handy on wet roads.
