Hi all im thinking of upgrading to a disco 2 with a 3.9 v8,i think ive found one but there is a tapping noise coming from the engine would i be right in thinking this would be either a worn cam shaft or the lifters the engine has 56000 on the odometer

Engine cold or warm/hot? Tap at piston speed or valve (half) speed? Out of interest is it fitted with LPG?

It happens when the engine is warm,at low and high revs, all of the service records indicate that it is genuine mileage and there is no l.p.g fitted, any help appreciated guys.

I'm not sure about your knowledge on these so I apologise in advance if Im not giving you the credit you deserve.
Going back to my younger days, I thought the same and it was a minute leak from the manifold gasket that sounded like a tap - just a thought mate. Hey guys - did they to the 3.9 in a disco 2???? thought it ended in the 1??

So what do you think the cubic capacity of the V8 disco 2 is ?, thats right it's the same. :)

Thanks mate, I wasn't sure. I thought they went to 4.0 after the 1. Interesting to know though - did they do the coil packs instead of the Dizzy..... mmmmm?

Land Rover called it a 4.0 litre so to differentiate between the two engines. Your correct no dizzy and fitted with coil packs and it has completly different induction system so increasing the engines torque over the old unit. :)

I've no personal experience of the suggested 'manifold leak' problem but if it's a metallic tap under the conditions you describe, then a slipped liner is a possibility with these engines. I hope I'm wrong & it turns out to be something more simple.

What do ya mean... coil pack but no dizzy?

If I've understood your question the answer is as follows:

The early injected V8's have a simple injection system and separate ignition system - these are referred to as Flapper and Hotwire injection. The later models have more sophisticated injection/engine management systems - Thor and Gems.

The later systems use ignition systems that are controlled electronically by the engine ECU to control ignition and injection timing and therefore there is no distributor. To produce the spark, coil packs are used - I think these are essentially capacitor discharge ignition modules. The firing of the coil packs is triggered from the ECU depending on the information provided by the various sensors. The timing is (I believe) controlled by the crank sensor.

I'm sure somebody more familiar with it all will soon correct me if I'm mistaken but anyway that's my understanding!!
