Or someone could've really ****ed up setting the tappets. Try setting them to what would be correct then turn the engine over by hand to make sure nothing hits internally (taking the glow plugs out ensures no compression so easy to turn engine) If it seems ok then start her up and see if the tappets are noisy and how well she runs.

they should do if they dont as said someones buggered about before, turn engine clockwise and if you miss one keep going and get it next time

Alright cheers guys. Il have another go next weekend. Would there be any obvious signs that they are that far out? Seems mad that it'd still work!

Obvious sign would be with engine in any position can you move any of the rocker arms?, if not turn engine over a 1/4 turn and try again if still no movement they are way way out.

you are following guide on page 2 no 6 down set no3 etc ,and watching carefully so that it just reaches fullest compression of spring and no further then check, the other way is to turn engine till valves on 1 cylinder are rocking one opoening and one shutting both under compression the if thats no 4 cylinder set no 1 cylinder pair ,no2 set 3 no3 set 2 no 1 set 4 ,this is because 1and 4 are at the top at same time while 2 and 3 are both at bottom if one of pair is just finishing compression stroke the other must be finishing exhaust stroke so both valves will be sligthly open one shutting the other opening the other cylinder must have on compression stroke and power stroke both valves closed

James so you set them on the opposite cylinder rock as opposed to the rule of 9?
