Tappet noise

Hi all
I have a P38 petrol 4.6 1995 and its developed a tappet noise, its worse when its cold and quietens down when warm, I've had the sump off and clean it out plus the pick up pipe but wasn't really dirty, I've had the front off and replaced the oil pump, still making the noise on the drivers side bank, I've had the rocker cover off on that side and it looks a bit dry, started the engine and the oil trickled out which to me wasn't right even when i picked up the revs it didn't seem to fill with oil, I'm going to try a engine flush and see if its just a blockage, if that doesn't work is there anything else i can try or look out for or do i have to take the top of the engine off to check the tappets as it looks a major job, any help would be grateful.

But a cracked exhaust pipe can sound just like a tappet "tick".
