I'm rebuilding my Series IIA's 2.25 petrol engine - rebored to +0.020", polished crank with new std bearings etc. I'm fitting a new cam but can't decide what to do about the tappets. The old parts are in good shape with little wear. Should the brass slides have a grey coating on the concave surface, or is that just a deposit? Britpart replacements are under a tenner complete, whereas original parts (sold as genuine) are over a hundred. Over £800 for a set of tappets seems a bit steep, whereas £50 seems too cheap for decent quality. It's the original '67 motor and I want it to last - maybe I should just reuse the old ones. On conventional flat tappet engines I always change the lifters for a new cam. Thoughts?

Turner Engineering are well respected I bought my bits there for 200di including a rocker that had worn replacement looked good, sliders cheap but if yours are ok , reuse
They should go in one way in same location as they came out
Ensure pushrod properly seated
The brass tappet sliders are all brass the grey should polish off I should think

Thanks - I had a long conversation with the tech at Turners today, who advised that the originals have a grey bearing surface bonded to the curved seat of the brass slide, whereas none of the repro ones do. He also advised using the originals unless they were very badly worn, so I have. I've used modern rollers as there were a couple of hairline cracks on mine. The front facing surface of the slides has 'front' embossed on it as you say.

I’ll watch for that when I do my 5mb diesel later this year , all brass on the 200tdi
How much was the reborn and whose pistons did you fit

if your old tappets are ok use those new ones are likely to be far worse quality, ive replaced a lot of new rollers that lasted barely a year

series originals were plain brass ,bearing coating was added for later models ,not that it matters for for a 21/4

Meridian engine services near Cambridge did the rebore and crank polish for £180. Pistons are hard to find at present, unless you want £10 Britparts, but I managed to find AE Nurals at Bearmach for about £45.

James, the slides in my engine are the originals for '67 which have the bearing coating. As mentioned, I've fitted new rollers as I had a couple of hairline cracks in the old ones. The repros came from Turners so hopefully they're OK - it's the original block and I really don't want to trash it. I guess you can tell if a roller's failing as the valve clearances will close up?
