Hi all,

Had my Disco for just over a year now and i'm going to be doing some greenlaning in it. The problem is apart from a decent set of tyres and a 8 ton tow strap it hasn't been modified. I used to greenlane (a few years ago) in an 83 Range Rover but that had diff and steering guards as well as rock sliders etc.

I have to use my car for work and just wondered with my only having the tyres and no serious mods how heavy on the mud can I risk getting?

Thanks in advance

forget about the mud. You'll have to drive it to find that out. No 2 lanes are the same and neither are any 2 drivers. so just suck it and see. Most important thing hyou need to do is get some decent recovery points up front & rear as the disco hasn't got any If you have a towbar that'll do for rear recovery but you'll still need something at the front.

Much the same as me. I have brought some front jate rings and shackles today as well as some ropes and strops. I will just take it easy and always travel with another landy.

Get a couple of diff guards, there's less than £20 each, then think about a steering guard, they normally have recovery points attached.

Just go and enjoy the countryside and your Disco. So long as you have recovery points, a decent strop and another car to tug you out should you need to, let common sense rule your left foot and you should be able to stay out of trouble. Over time you will appreciate the capabillity of your car and just how far you want to push your daily drive. Make sure you've shelled out on some AA recovery before you start on the mods.

Don't bother with Jate rings for a Disco 1. If you fit them on the chassis legs, they're invariably too low down and a complete pain to reach if/when you get stuck. Bearing in mind that the front bumper lower spoiler and side trims are very vulnerable, a better option is to purchase a heavy duty front bumper and if possible, fit swivel recovery pins to this, then use both to hook up a bridle strap. I bought a winch bumper for £175 all in but I've seen non-winch bumpers for £99 on eBay.

Forwards planning tells you to fit the strop before you get stuck?? and as Nath said. trim or remove the lower Valance and bumper caps.

My disco has an HD steering guard with recovery eye's and hi-lift jacking points. But it's the first disco I've owned that has had one fitted. the other just had a jate ring fitted. and I've only got this guard cos it was so cheap.

Very sensible points! Unfortunately, you never really plan to get stuck so its possible to be stuck and not have fitted the straps. Also, and I'm sure others have done something but on mine there's nowhere to clip/secure a bridle strap out the way while driving normally (I suppose I can use a bungee cord and clip it to the passenger door window frame or something like that. I don't have a roof rack, roof bars, sunroof or a light bar, etc).

I've been through the "trim the bumper caps" but feel much happier with a HD bumper protecting against the inevitible little scrapes etc with the trees and ground etc (more off roading than green laning though). Fed up of smashing and replacing indicators, scrappies seem to be able to charge a little bit more than you're expecting to pay.

Where did you get the guard from, how much £££ and is the price still available etc?

I think the main piont was price difference between the 2 options... ermmm £150+

Yeah trying not to spend too much at the moment as i'm looking at changing it later in the year (although it will be for another Disco) the front trimk has already gone :)
