tail gate keeps popping open

1991 RRC.

We've had this RRC for three years now, and the n/s of the upper tailgate has always been a bit weak and can pop. The o/s was always strong and would keep it closed.

Now, both sides are popping open when travelling. But it closes firmly and only the really strongest tug on the handle can get it to pop open when parked.

I note that with the bottom half open, the top closes better

I know WHY it pops open (crap design) but can anyone tell me how to make the best of a bad job...?

Unless its catching somewhere I would suggest lubricating the catch mechanism on the inside of the tailgate, My 1984 always needed an extra shove on the left to close it properly.

I ended up taking the rubber seal that runs along the bottom of the upper gate off...... It was failing so made it very difficult to close......... And yes the left of mine needs an extra shove to get it closed

How was it without the rubber seal? Draughty? Noisy?

Mines sit used for pure luxury reasons so I don't mind it being that tad noisier as the burble can be heard better ...... Don't really notice if it's draughts or not. No signs of extra water getting in either. Also gave me the chance to coat it in waxoyl/sealer to prevent it rotting any further

I'm quite sure this has come up a few times, try doing a search. Bottom line is the top tailgate pops open due to body flex, to stop it IIRC you need to check/adjust the catches and possibly alignment of the top tailgate. make sue the catches and the operating rods are clean and well lubricated.

Mine has similar problems,
If you look across the tailgate it has a bow in it of about 6 mm, I'm surprised the glass bends tbh,

So will be getting an aluminium upper tailgate at the end if the month...
