Just after everyone's thoughts on Tachographs and the law as such

My defender isn't my every day motor I have a transit van, I tow with my 90 (van back) and I tow everything from car trailers to caravans to mini diggers,

I understand that over 3.5 tons for commercial reasons needs a Tachograph

Now I don't tow for work or haven't as yet the closet I've been is dropping a mini digger off for my dad, how hard is it to install a tacho as it would be just my luck to get pulled and then have a nightmear proving it's not buissness use, I also know about the 50km rule,

And if you are using a tacho do you need a operators lience ect?

What is the wisdom behind having a Tachographs in vehicles? And what purpose do they serve

Think you'll find it's 100km rule these days, if it's for personal use no need for tacho, if used for own business no cpc required, if for hire or reward and over 3500kg you'll need a cpc cert aswell, not sure on 'o' licence rules though but think it comes under the hire or reward bit

Easy - you take it to an authorised tacho installer, leave it for a couple of hours... return...and then the hard part...pay for it! :D

As above really, it has to be installed by an authorised person.
Just had a couple of transits done just over £1000 each.
Private use is the way to go, keep away hire and reward,
CPC both driver and operator, bank account details (enough money
to repair and operate the vehicle) and a ream of paper work and digital
tacho cards compliance.
Thor, tachographs record the vehicle/driver movements, speed, time, GPS,
mileage. Then there's a raft of drivers hours that have to be kept.

As said private use no Tacho required.

Hire and reward and over 3500ton you will need a Tacho, shouldn't need drivers CPC as under 7500ton, won't need "O" license if towing with defender as it is a commercial vehicle and duel purpose use, a van is a different story. You will also need to keep records of what your doing and driving when not using the Tacho to prove rest and daily breaks.

If you don't need one then don't go down this route it can be a mine field.

You might want to go on VOSA website and down load rules and regs it explains a lot in there, there is also something I've read in there about mini diggers and transporting from site to site and the laws.
