Ive recently come back from uni and went out in my 90 for the first time since xmas earlier. Im planning a drive to cornwall in the morning (3-4hrs) so thought i'd check the oil level prior to leaving.

It read well above the "danger" mark which was odd because when i changed the oils in the summer i made sure everything was spot on. I did however spot a bottle of atf fluid which wasnt in its usual place in my 90's garage (open, so no way to secure access to it) on our farm, so im thinking someone may have overfilled it on purpose.

If the case is that atf has been added to the engine oil, am I safe to drain a little off so its at a safe level via the sump plug, or play it safe, dump the lot and refill?

Thanks

Ollie

easy way to hydrolic an engine if it went unoticed, change the lot

cost of replacement oil vs cost of engine

can someone get easy access to your engine bay then?

As its been a fair while what are the chances of an internal leak? coolant maybe?

as above, dump the lot, change the filter, and keep an eye on it.

Drop the oil and replace the filter like already mentioned.... when I did my first oil change on my 90 300tdi I replaced it as per handbook with the exact amount of oil. I had some blue smoke for the first 20 miles but dipstick read bang on max. When I came to drop the oil 4k later the oil was well above max and I had not added any.
I can only put it down to me not draining the oil properly and it being very old and not warm enough to flow out. I now add a little less oil and run it for a week and then top up if required.
