hi all,
I have a 2000 x reg freelander 1.8 petrol with 72k up that has a heavy thumping noise from the front suspension area when on a bumpyish road, quiet as you like on the M/Way. There is also a slight squeaking over speed bumps.
Its been in the garage twice for it and they cant find a fault, ive had the drop links done about 1000 miles ago and ive just changed the 2 antiroll bar bushes. Incidentally 1 of the plastic roll bar bush retainers fell off when i just touched it, so i glued it back in place then fastened a jubilee clip round it, there seems to be no sideward movement.
Nothing seems to foul the bodwork. It went through the MOT with no mention of a problem, any ideas greatly appreciated.

Bottom ball joint , track rod end or possibly seized and /or worn front and rear bushes on the lower wishbone.
It could also be the plastic bearing /bush on top of the strut .
I had the same recently and found the bottom ball joint showed no wear in the static position but when suspension moved due to sudden bumps etc it knocked .
I also replaced the worn drop links with new genuine LR items after the FAI branded items had badly worn after 4 K miles and replaced the poly ARB bushes with rubber ones again.
Jack it of the ground and get in there with a decent sized pry bar ......

ok, thanks, if it ever stops raining again I'll get under it for the umpteenth time and have a poke round with a big stick!
