I have this exact noise (has been driving me mad to locate).

its only in the last couple of weeks started, it had disappeared randomly for a while ie few days.

Obviously its going to fail at some point. All other videos of the crank pulley death clack, don't sound like this. But that's the exact same sound.

I don't know the make of the crank pulley (could be original).

Will the death clank come later?

Thanks

Hi,

Could be also the belt tensionner. Try to locate the sound …

Hi,

Thank you for the reply.

I've removed the side panel, its definitely from the lower bottom. Next step is to remove the belt tensioner for the aircon belt to at least eliminate that. That can wait until tomorrow, its dark and raining.

Take both belts off & examine the crank pulley. If it's delaminated it will be obvious one the belts are off. At same time you can check for loose tensioners, etc.

If you change the pulley, you need a corteco pulley unless if you want to change it frequently.
For the belt and the tensionners, you need good quality parts, same reason.

Things didn't go as planned, couldn't remove the aux belt, need a different 24mm and make adjustments to it. Spent a bit of time trying to get the spanner on the nut. I'll have to come back to that. I loosened the a/c tensioner and checked that, I couldn't find any play or noise etc. The a/c belt was cracked badly (surprised it hadn't failed) that's been cut and removed. I couldn't feel any roughness or noise from the a/c pulley.

The noise after removing the a/c belt is a lot quieter, almost back to the normal tone it had originally.

All I can say from the crank pulley, no visible dust, no cracks in the rubber and no wobble (like if one of the previous youtube videos).

Many thanks for all your help.

Little bit of an update.

The alternator belt has been jumping (sits in different grooves on the water pump pulley) and as a result instead of a 5 ribbed belt its now a 4 ribbed belt. Found the remnant's on the black pipe. This happened I think (after talking to OH) that it was just prior to removal of the a/c belt and that when she was in traffic ie road works, heard a noise, but dismissed this as the on going road works in the area. In the new year I'll get a garage to investigate. The car just clocked over 200000. Going back to driving the 406 coupe. I changed the crank pulley and belt on that this summer.

A little update - started up the hippo as its been a few days since last and a new noise -

exactly like that

I've removed the belt, just by pulling at the belt under the car and it lifted off over the crank pulley - which shouldn't happen.

A new belt is on order.

Old belt - sorry video isn't great

I cut it in half and rolled it up to put in my pocket - not enough hands.

I did run the car without the belt on and its quiet, just a normal diesel engine noise (if there is such a thing). I didn't run the car long, ecu not happy about the no belt issue. I've got to check a couple of pulleys when I next get a chance, as it was getting dark.

The crank pulley itself, I couldn't get it too wobble or move without any amount of leverage with a pry bar. I was expecting it to be able to be pulled about - as demonstrated in bmw youtube videos. From the date stamp on the crank pulley, its from 2005 and is original and has managed 200k (no service history to state its been replaced).
