I fitted a new Superwinch 8500 to my 90 a year ago and have only used it once to recover a lightweight that got stuck.

I've just checked it today and it doesn't work. All I get is a click from the solenoid. And no action from the motor.

The drum will turn in both directions with the clutch disengaged. It got doused in water at the weekend when I crossed a ford.

Any ideas?

It could be. I've sprayed the contacts with WD. I went through a ford on Sunday and it's been garaged since. Do you think it's just a case of drying out?

I assumed, because the solenoid clicks for forward and reverse that it's likely to be the motor?

Do they need taking apart and bushes cleaning periodically?

James

its probably just lack of use

i get a click when my isolator switch is making a bad connection. im guessing your solenoid isnt too happy with once a year use!

it either needs the solenoid checking/replacing (theyre often sealed) or the motor checking to make sure, as you say, the brushes have got a good connection to the comm.

my guess is solenoid problems though, or supply voltage.

has you an isolator switch? if so, make sure thats good or temporarily bypass it for testing.

cheers

In which case I'd immediatly blame the isolator before anything else.

Mine got jammed on once so I bought a new one but then stripped down the old one out of interest. Very primitive affair, cleaned it up and kept as a spare.

Highly likely your isolator is making a bad contact. I regularly lube mine to keep the contacts clean.

Also yes winch manufacturers/gurus recommend monthly use to keep things moving etc.

Cheers

always best just to make sure it gets used once a mth, rather than having it doing nowt for a year, good luck with it hopefully sumat simple

nunny are you on about the winch or your lammy ?:)
ha ha,nice 1...think the winch would be alot cheaper to fix than the lammy..l.o.l...yeh it pays to turn the lamy over every mth too ,if not been used, stops the engine seals going brittle...ya reply made me chuckle tho,all the best, nunny

Going to........

1) Try it again as I WD'd the connections on Wed.
2) Check all connections and terminals.
3) Bypass the isolator.
4) Clean contacts on solenoid (in it's not a sealed unit).

Failing that I'll keep taking bits off it until I can see a clutch or brushes and clean up as much as poss. Hope one of the above will have the desired effect!!

Wish me luck!

James

Well, after several hours of bypassing things, cleaning connectors, removing the winch, taking apart the solenoid..........

IT ONLY BLOOMIN WORKS NOW DOESN'T IT!!

I'm chuffed to bits and thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Looks like it was corroded terminals from solenoid to the winch.

My only concern was that one terminal had obviously got very hot at one point, but last time it was used it was recovering a dead lightweight up a steep incline through deep slosh on a double-line, so must have pushed it too hard.

There was a whiff of smoke momentarily from another terminal when I was testing it but I hope it was residue from some WD40 I was using to clean it up. We'll see!!

So, I'm chuffed to bits as that could have been expensive. I now need to remember to use it more regularly.

Thanks again.

James

PS Part of the kit was two parallel bars with three black boxes linking them which are wired into the + pos side before the winch. Just wondered what they were? Poss resistors or regulators?

nice 1 glad you got it working at a low cost well done

Yeah mine had some thing similar mate, was described as a circuit breaker but I reckon it was just a fuse arrangement.

Mine was a 3x50 amp, I got a 150 amp megafuse instead :)
