Hi all,

The drain plug thread on my sump pan has had it! Someone has already stuffed it with a helicoil which was not correctly fitted and has come loose!
I have been told there is not enough meat on the pan now to fit a new helicoil, so does anyone know where I can get either a new pan, 2nd hand pan, or any other ideas would be much welcome! I have tried the tinternet and the local 2nd hand dealers but no luck as yet.

Thanks guys,

Chris.

Hi mate,

There is just not enough there, current plan is to get this hole welded up, as I am told this can be done in the ali pan, and then get a new hole drilled and tapped! Unless I can locate a 2nd hander in the meantime!

Cheers

Chris.

Cheers shocker, can't seem to find a second hander!!

Trying to call in a favour with a mate of mine that has the gear needed!

Cheers

Chris.

A thought, if you have a pal who "does",then why not get him to weld/braze/fix an NON stripping insert for the new plug ?Well,I say "non stripping" but what I mean is "less likely to strip disastrously than ally"....as in brass,or steel .Then you would have a nice upgrade to ensure this doesnt happen again. Its a common thing on many engines, whatever the material of the sump. Most of the 300tdi engines that I have seen have had it to some extent.....I get around it with some PTFE tape in the less serious cases. But thats a ferrous sump so things are most likely different for you with your posh ally one !

Yeah mate, a posh ally broken one!!!

Thanks for the ideas.

Just a quick note to finish, have had an insert welded in and new hole drilled and tapped. Good as new and back on the road! At least I saved a load of petrol money!
Thanks to all for help and advice!

Cheers Chris.

Well you know how to find lost things.....think where you last had it....

(sorry, poor taste but couldnt resist....no will power:()

Well, the important thing is that you got in done. Can I suggest some kind of oil prooff fibre washer or an O ring to do away with the need to tighten hard ? And maybe a nice bit of engraving along the lines of "Oi! Dont bloody tighten me so hard!" :D:D
