you will allways have some play in diff lock as collar is designed that way to help engagement ,but is slack is reduced by diff lock center diff must be an issue, shafts wear as do thrust washers
big job? box out or can diff be removed in situ?
whats involved in checking it or replacing / repairing it?

cheers jim :D

it would be best to remove box ,check for any end float on intermediate gear , diff once stripped out can be split (bearing covering the bolts can be prised up with 2 lever bars usually)and whatever parts needed bought, planet gears have copper thrust washers and 2 sun gears selectable washers, shafts are very prone for wear, if its an old box with general heavy wear might be better to just replace it

That sounds bad. I am going to Wales in 2 weeks is it likely to last until then, or do I need to do something now

I treated my engine to a nice new clutch and flywheel....it doesn't need them now it needs the old ones back  landrovers are just arseholes!

Had a barny with my Mrs earlier, well she did most of the barnying I just shrugged my shoulders and walked off. Basically I needed to head in town to get road tax and she wanted to come along for the spin but was talking me out of waiting for her and getting really stroppy about it, so off I went. As I was driving past the front of the house I looked and saw her screaming at me through the window, so I stopped and went in to see what the issue was. She was not happy that I didn't wait for her, so I said I would wait. This was wrong it seems, as she then went all mental about me waiting for her and told me to just go, so off I went again. Que yet more rage because I didn't wait for her and yet still being told not to wait for her. This made me think about how awkward Land Rovers are, you can buy it all the right parts and fresh oil and so on and it will still go in a strop about something you'll probably never get to the bottom of. Anyway, by the time I got home the Mrs had shut up.
