Sudden stearing lunge.

Hi folks, i just had a hella fright on the road just now. Driving allong and sudenly and i mean out of nowhere the stearing wheel yanks left.

I thaught id hit somthing but' after looming at dashcam there was nothing.

I drive this road a couple times a day evry day so not unexpected road conditions.

I am lost as at a glance everything looks normal.
 
Check all steering components for conditions and surety - every nut, bolt, washer, bush and joints including steering column UJ's and steering damper for condition + prybar flex every joint. And check front wheels for any play including swivel joints.

eta: same with rears and A frame bushes, joints, mounting points as rear wheel/suspension failures often inherently appear at front steering faults.

Could be a bearing seizing up on the left side ?
In addition to what @v8250 said ...
Jack each front wheel off the ground and see if it turns freely and with the same amount of force as the other side.
Jack both wheels of the ground and check the effort required to get the other wheel to spin in the opposite direction.
 
Funny thing but the pre Defender models and series have a whole lot fewer problems with wheel bearings.


Iirc a common defender mod was to leave the 1/2 shaft axle seal out to allow diff oil to get to the bearing as per the series models.
 
Does this apply to TD5?

Mine's on 131,000 and the wheel bearings have never been touched, unless the garage did them when the swivel balls
were replaced.
Although even that was 40,000 miles ago

I think TD5 ones are preset jobbies ie no human error involved.

TDI are wing it and guess it, one day I may try and set them up as per the book with a dti gauge, nah I wont!
 
Fixed the bearing the other day. It was in utter bits.
Dad walked me through it and now ill know for next time.

I can confirm the td5 had a spacer to preset the tension. Hiwever mine has a 50mm nut on the end of the axle that my dad was confused about. My auties o5 td5 doesnt have that.

Do you have a picture? The TD5 has a spacer then a single large stake nut which replaces the old two lock nuts that were used before. The stake nut will be 52mm
