Hi there

Right any help would be appreciated. i've just been driving home from work and plodding allong at 30 then all off sudden i turned a corner and i had to fight to keep the car straight so i pulled up checked over the weels and they were fine. i pulled off and the car shottoff to the right i corrected it and drove 15mph all the way home but i was constantly correcting the stearing.. the best way i can desctibe it was driving on Ice? i have no i dea what has happend or what has caused it! im just at a loss . when parked up the stearing is fine turn the wheel left and it goes left right the same its when im moving the car goes off to the right and im then having to fight to keep it strainght..

One other poing when i went over the speed bumps on our road with the left tires i just kept the stearing straing when the right wheels wne over then the fun began... so im guessing its with the right sire but i just dont knwo what!

Regards

Marc

Any help appreciated

i didn't notice any heat tbh but there was a fair bit of noise every so often.

im suppriesed it happened so fast! im taking off the front wheel now what can i look for with the bearings? EG. tall tale signs?

check all the suspension bushes an radius arm bushes while your under there - a little bit of axle or suspension wander would cause similar problems. ideally get a pry bar or crow bar and give them all a little wiggle and make sure everythin is nice and tight.

trackrod was replaced for a recent mot (feb) and i've just checked and its fine!

Update... not good!

There has been snapped metal involved! on the rear wheel on the right you have a metal bracket then a steal arm connected to the chassis the the bracket connecting the two have completly snapped off! (explains the noise not sure what other damage is involved but it's pretty bad) and im guessing explains the stearing problems with it not been attatched.

Im gonna get photos now and i'll upload in a bit!

The metal bracket you are talking about should be welded to the rear axle case, but they rust and eventually break off !!!! As you now know.

You will need to weld on new brackets, do both sides at the same time.

The brackets are cheap, so it'll just be a bit of welding to pay for.

PM729 Rear Axle Tie Rod Bracket

Once they been done the rest is just a matter of re-connecting the tie rod and that should bring the rear axle back in place and all will be well. Do give them a good layer or two of protective paint to stop this happening again.

Thanks all and biglad!

phew i was fearing far worse tbh!! lukly when i got this land rover i thought myself to weld... and i ain't gonna regret that decision! lol

The pics below one off both sides.

i'll let you all know how it goes. btw is there something i should look out for when doing this? or any special tips?? just to make my over complicated life any easyer.

THANKS AGAIN

Hi Wapps, when you are doing this repair it is very important the the position of the new bracket(s) are correct and even both sides so the axle is in the correct position. This will govern how the cars runs in the future so you need to get it right !!!

Measure very carefully the distance between the axle at the fitting and the chassis member that the tie rod passes through, on the good side - that will be your reference measurement.

Also, try to remember what it felt like when the old bracket broke? Frightening wasn't it? - the new one needs welding to such a std that it doesn't break away again, ever.

All done took my time did it in 4 hours. i spent more time cleaning off all the old C*** from the axle. other that than all i had to do was crank up the body work so the rear wheel was off the ground then used a cargo lash to pull the axle back into palce. job done! BUT

yep there is allways a but.. when i looked at the front wheel again i noticed on closer inspection the thread is wearing away on the outer side! the reason i noticed this is a puddle of grease on the floor next to the inside off the wheel i'm guessing its from the swivle ball on the wheel as this is very greasey compared to the other wheel. could these be related and whats needed to repair this?

regards
