Hi, new to the zone, have question which will probably have all of you rolling in the aisles, but still .... when I change from high to low box and vice-versa in my defender 90 it doesn't always click straight in, have to lift clutch a little and try again - am I doing something wrong, and if it happens when rolling do you HAVE to stop completely to re-adjust? Thankyou o wise ones...

Sounds normal to me.

With practice and timing you can switch from low to high on the move but be prepared for a few clatters and bangs while you're learning.

It can be done but the transfer box doesn't have synchro so you need to either match the speed, or stop to do it. Double declutch sometimes does it. Low to high should be fine on the move (slowish speeds), but high to low often does in fact need a stop. Doesn't help that the lever/change tends to be quite stiff and short throw too.

HTH

If it happens when rolling, i find the ensuing jolt sends all the baccy down the crappy plastic thing behind the steering wheel and into the speedo. It's a ****er when that happens!

think if its :rolly: its too late :D

Bit harsh there Oddy..I dont think you're a crap plastic thingy.

I'm not talking about the nut in FRONT of the steering wheel which is clearly defective

Interesting thesis there though - what is "behind" when referring to the wheel - it's something we sit "behind" but also we sit forward of the front of it!!! Hmmm - do we need a poll maybe???:D:D:D

tried sitting forward of the front of it this morning but got wedged with my head stuffed into the corner of the cab and one foot tangled in the gear levers (which I'll admit is fairly normal)........not even gonna talk about the indicator stalk  Dont care WHAT you say I'm using the seat from now on

I change up from low to high everyday pulling a 3 tonne trailer full of turf onto the road out of the field. I find if you clutch, put transfer lever in neutral, then clutch again and put it into high it changes fine with no crunches but must be done in distinct stages. Like some of the other posts say there is no synchro in the transfer box and double de clutching is the only way to do it. I'm used to it from old tractors with no syncro but it takes practice, down changes are really hard and you need to match speed and revs exactly or it won't happen. I always stop to change back into low or it makes expensive noises

Me point is...(well a bit pointless really but) if you have a steering wheel on its own, you would say the back of it is the bit the shaft comes off and the front is the bit with the horn on and what you see when yer looking at it...or driving... so why do we refer to being "behind" the wheel - surely behind means "round the back of" - how can you be behind something when you're looking at the front of it?

When Bob is behind tweets, he is looking at the back of him and when he is in front of him, he is clearly noshing the FRONT of him - you couldn't say he was behind him if he was noshing his front - unless he was hung like a donkey and still mighty floppy - whereas we all know he is in fact "nelly furtado" (Hung like a bird)
