Hi all can anyone help think ive taken on too much with this!. Need to change near side CV joint gaiter, have removed wheel, hub nut, calipers and nut on the ball joint, I've removed the clips from the boot and wiggled the drive shaft, do I need to remove the hub? Or is there something I've missed?

You have removed all you need to from what i'v read except the bottom ball joint needs spitting from the hub carrier .The shaft is held into the CV using a C clip. The only way to get the two apart is hold the shaft and strike the CV joint with a heavy copper hammer to force it off the shaft spline. It's easier to do if the joint is free of the hub. If you can't do it then it should be no more than an hours work for a competent garage ;)

It failed its MOT on the gaiter being perished so thats why im in this position. Think I might just have to give in and take it to the garage, don't want to cause more problems. Nodge do I need to split the cv from the shaft to do the gaiter?

Normaly yes although you can get high stretch boots and a cone shaped fitting tool that stretches the new boot over the joint. I don't reckon these stretchy boots last as long though !!

If you shop around a bit you can pick complete drive shafts up for about £50, have fit a few from a ebay seller with no issues with quality, I dont normally bother changing boots just pop a new shaft in,

I'm in hertfordshire - bit out if your way i think very kind offer tho. If I ever got the thing off i might just out a whole shaft on. Fear I'm just not strong enough, struggling to get a couple of bolts free (im only a girly with 4 month old assisting!). I might give in see how its done then do it if needed in future. Changed rear trailing arm bushes last year, stupidly thought this would be as easy lol

hi again to get the whole shaft out here is what you need to do first take the belly protector of then undo stub nut with wheel on the ground this makes it easier, then wheel off and undo bottom ball joint and pull outwards, at this stage the shaft might come with it have a bowl to catch any oil just in case under the ird, nad and then if you just want the end shaft of you need to take the circlip of the end of the shaft or you will never get it off then just tap with a wooden malet or rubber one to get the shaft out have somebady pull while you gentle prize it out . hope this helps you are a bit to far away from me but I am sure there must be sombody closer who can help

I've only gone and done it! Thank you so much everyone for your help, advice and support, we got there in the end! Next job lower suspension arm on the other side - might aswell give it a bash  looks like I'll have the other halfs defender a bit longer :)

thats easy just undo all the nuts and that half the job done i would take the nut off at the back where it goes into the big ally holder and undo and take the 2 bolts out of that but undo the nut first then undo the 2 nuts on the ball joints it should almost drop of give it a wack with a big hammer downwards and this should undo the ball joint on the wheel end then the other one and then just reverse except without the big hammer hope this helps you out

Most Freelander owners do, but it's not always for repairs. ;)
