Hi All,

Just started helping a friend who's been given (yes, given) a series 3 which someone was about to scrap.

The story is that 2 years ago, it was being used as an everyday work vehicle, and one day it just cut out. The guy who owned it couldn't find the problem, and didn't want to spend any more on it, so it had sat in his workshop since.

We had a play, and discovered that the shaft which operates the distributor and oil pump was not turning - the brass teeth had stripped. We have sourced a second hand one for now (new one on order from Land Rover), and that side of things seems sorted.

However, when we were trying to get the thing running, the engine was being flooded with fuel (and I mean flooded, air filter had an inch of fuel in it, exhaust manifold full etc). He took the carb apart, and found that the valve operated by the float was stuck, so it was never cutting the fuel flow. We were advised to drain the oil, clean out the sump and replace the oil filter and oil, which we have done.

He's now reassembled the carb, having freed that valve off, but now there is no fuel coming through the carb into the engine.

What is the most likely thing to be causing this? We've re-checked the diaphragm (position and condition), and that the piston moves up and down freely, both seem ok.

Really stuck now, just want to hear her try to fire!!

Any advice welcome

Thanks

Rob

Your FLOAT CHAMBER needs fixed.

This has NOTHING to do with the black rubbery diaphragm. If that is OK, and the air slide goes up, and then falls down under its own weight, assume they are fine.

I suspect you have bent the float arm too much and the float is holding the needle valve on its seat all the time - stopping the fuel flow. Maybe you have assembled it not quite right? Whatever, take the float chamber off and set the level EXACTLY according to the instructions.

Basically you take the bottom of the carb off and let the float rest on the needle valve. The clearance should be set so that the float can drop DOWN from that position when the float-chamber is fitted to the carb.

See here for the way to sort it. ......

3 stromberg single

If you can't suss this out, get the manual from ANY car fitted with a Stromberg carb, Triumph, SAAB, whatever, and you will see how to do it.

Easy when you know how job!
