I recently bought a 1983 land rover 110 with 4 speed and 3.5 carb V8 as a non runner.

After fitting a new distributer and a bit of fettling I got it running but noticed on top of the offside exhaust manifold there was a flange/bracket with 2 pipes and exhaust belching out into the engine bay.

what on earth is supposed to attach to them?

First thought was some sort of EGR system... but I didnt know they were fitted on such old models.

Try sticking a picture up, I know some petrol models have a pipe off the manifold going to the carb/air intake to redirect hot air to help in cold weather.

Unfortunately my tratter is diesel so I can't be of more help

It's down at the garage at the moment getting some welding done on the outrigger... i'll try and get down there to take a picture.

ah here we go... did a bit of googling. Seems you are right about it being some sort of cold weather pre-heater system.

I just have a couple of cone filters directly attached to the stombergs.

It directs hot air from the manifolds (not exhaust fumes) into the air box then through the carbs to stop them icing up in cold weather. I think it also help it warm up so you use less choke.
