strange noise?

can somone help please,my 300tdi in my disco has developed a damned irritating whiring noise when the revs rise,so at first i thought it was the viscous fan so off it came and guess what it's still there aaargh!!

it sounds like its coming from the left of the front casing as you look at the injun ive ckeck all the fluid levels and nothing's running dry?

any idea's!!

It likely to be the idler/tensioner on the serpentine belt, they do Canary impersonations a lot !!

Before spending a money try "the penny trick ". It costs 1p and VERY often cures the noise.

Do a search for penny trick.

will do,but this dont sound like a canary more like a huge fan it's silent on tickover.

it could be the power steering pump on its way out or alternator bearings


i know it's not the alternater cos i got the reciept for a new one that was fitted a fortnight ago so would the p.s pump spin faster with higher revs?

could be a possiblity i did have a leak from it the other day but it was a loose pipe,the motors been stood since xmas and was only every now and then to tow a caravan.

check your turbo hoses...
mine leaked and gave me a funnny wurring sound, just nipped the jubilee clips up.

will do,but the missus has just gone oot in it and it sound's like a fecking milk float so me thinks the p.s pump is on it's way oot :mad:

Changing the PS pump is straight forward. You need to disconnect the inlet and outlet pipes and then undo about four or five bolts.

You'll lose some fluid so have some ready to top up. Bleeding it involves turning from one lock to the other and topping the fluid up. There is also a bleed nipple on top of the steering box
 
just took the belt off to try the penny trick as sugested and the water pump is real stiff to turn by hand is that right or have i found the problem?

If you do not know the vehicle servicing history then now would be a good time to do the cam belt, either way the 'P' gasket behind the water pump might be a good idea?
