Strange noise

When the ignition is turned off after driving, there is a whirring type noise coming from the engine. Sounds like the cooling fan, but it doesn't come on in this weather.
Its a 2001 TD4. Any ideas?

scrap it!

had something similar before, when weather was really hot, sounded like a 747 in the engine bay. turned out it was both fans running like billy-o. Also had the engine management light up. Turned engine off then back on, everything was fine, no eml, no fans running. Local garage ran it up on test book, found no fault codes.

No engine light on. Will check the fans next time

spindown noise. As far as I know and if it is the same, no solution found for it yet ? Good luck.

Thanks for that willo, the noise is intermitent and hasn't happened the last few days, when it does I will check it out

hi paul, if the noise is comeing from the front near side right behind the headlight it could be a deisel heater that some have fitted check handbook, nowt t worry bout

I'm getting the same whirring noise by the sounds of it! Also had a slight 'burning' smell come into the cab. Whirring continued for about 1 min after turning off the engine, stopped again after re-starting the engine. Noise seems to come from passenger side of the engine bay, above the wheel arch. This is the first Freelander AND first DIESEL we've owned.
Any more ideas on this matter?

Hi Nick, only noticed this noise today, also a little bit of smoke coming from a small exhaust pipe? under the front bumper.

Havent heard the other noise for a while
