Hi all, am getting a strange noise from the rear of my freelander 1 TD4 auto.

When the car is accelerating or maintaining speed, there appears to be a bearing noise coming from the rear of my car. When I ease off the accelerator or lift off all together, the noise goes and comes back when I apply power.

About a year and a bit ago, I put my freelander into a landrover specialist and had to have the VCU changed, diff mounts changed (not sure if all 3 were done) and they also checked the rear diff. They said that the oil in the diff was a bit emulsified so they changed the oil but said that there was a slight rusting on the sun gear which might cause a little bit of noise.

I have also found that when changing from Park to either Drive or Reverse when stationary, the car seems to jolt a little (doesn't seem smooth)

Another thing, when driving some twisty country lanes I was on and off the accelerator quite harshly as I was carry speed through the corners, it seemed to give a small jolt from the back of the car every time I re-applied power.

Any thoughts on this?

Seems to be problem after problem with my car. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Oh by the way, the tyres are only half a year old and they were all replaced at the same time. I don't do much mileage so don't think they are wearing.

I was thinking I should have a look at the diff mounts again, you mentioned the drive shaft. Could you explain to me what might be causing problems there and why there would be a noise under load and not when no load please. Has anyone experienced any issues with driveshaft like this before.

Am wondering if that is the case, then it might have been a fateful off road day at Bala where I took my freelander through some really deep muddy water on the course. Think this is where my diff sucked in water, it also screwed the bearings on my air conditioning pump. An expensive day having a bit of fun although my freelander held its own against a lot of other landrovers.

I have found out my invoice for the work that I had done when I had the VCU replaced and can confirm that the front diff mount has been replaced. Can anyone think of a good way to check the bearings for the rear driveshafts?

Sorry for not getting back to you
Wear in the driveshafts could cause this, I've only had experience of them failing fully so don't know how to check for wear other than jacking both wheels off the deck and turning the wheel to check for any play.whilst jacked up you can wobble the wheels vertically and horizontally to check for bearing wear.
