Strange Noise When Car Comes To A Stop

hello can anyone help me solve this on my 4.0 P38

i first noticed it the other day a strange noise coming from the engine when the car comes to a stop. it went away and i thought nothing of it. but today i tuke the car on a long journey and on the way home i heard it again when i stopped at lights i got home and opened the hood and the noise seems to be coming from the top left side of the engine block were that black box is. pic here

i think its coming from the box itself but am not to sure my rangy is coming upto 100k on the clock and ive heard this is when the problems start does anyone know what this could be? thanks.

would help if you tried to describe the noise. another trick is to get a long wooden spoon from the kitchen and put the handle end against different parts of the engine and the flat end against your ear. works like a doctor's stethescope and will allow you to identify where the noise is coming from a little better.

if it is a tapping then i could be worn rockers, sticking tappets, worn followers, worn cam, slipped linner on number 2 cyclinder very coman and that is number 2 area

hard to explain what it sounds like. its not a rattle or a tapping sound its more of a deep pitched screeching noise and it only happens when the car has come to a stop once i start driving it stops. ive just started it up and the noise has gone again but no doubt it will be back.

under brakes?

its not the brakes. i thought it might be at first. when i got it home had it in park with the handbrake on and it was still doing it.

slipping belt maybe

might be alternator bearing or slipping serpantine belt as j says, indicating the tensioner assembly.
