Every time i get out of gear and depress the clutch and let the car roll to a stop with it's own 1.6 ton ass, i get this *tak tak tak* noise from g/box or t/box, almost like gears not quite meshing properly. I also feel as if the car is braking on it's own, without touching the brake pedal or handbrake lever. I tried pressing the brake pedal a few times and moving the handbrake lever a few times, but to no avail. Any ideas?

Could be thatr the handbrake drum adjuster is set to close / tight so the shoes are rubbing. Does the handbrake drum feel hot after a drive?

Alright, thanks for the replies, i'll give it a spin tomorrow and tell you the outcome on the handbrake drum, i would be surprised if it is because it was rebuilt and adjusted not long ago... and i do use diff lock quite a lot, so how should i go about testing transmission windup?

Simplest way is to jack up one wheel....if, as the weight is taken off it, it starts to 'unwind' or 'slip' there is transmission wind up and the reduction of friction on the lifted wheel will allow it to unwind itself.

Lift a front wheel with the handbrake on and in neutral, if you can spin the wheel (and front prop) then diff lock is out, if you only get 1/2 turn then it stops diff lock is engaged.

Sounds to me like a clutch release bearing, mine made a noise when you coasted to a stop....drives you nuts after a while. How many miles has it done and has it had a new clutch. They can also get crap around them especially if you get into a lot of mud etc and the drain is blocked...is it a regular tick that slows in rate as you stop? If so it rules out the engine as that speed is constant. As an after thought you may also have a calipre seized too causing the slowing effect which is being confused as emanating from the box....two different problems acting as one or seeming too?? Last final thought you have not got a stick or something stuck underneath rubbing....I have had that when I have been over ambitious in the off road stakes then you think something is really wrong!

It's had a new clutch about 1000km ago, but the noise sounds like it's coming more from the transfer box more than anything
