This has happened a couple of times on the Freelander 1.8 when I have parked it at night, side lights on, when walking away from the car it sounds like an electric motor noise as if something was being adjusted a bit, no idea what it is though and had forgotten about it till now!

Any ideas

Is it a clickly click clack clack clack noise?

if so its the IACV stepper motor

Basically when the throttle body is closed the engine breaths through a tiny pipe

This must be regulated to allow it to idle a the right speed under varying conditions like cold starts or when the engine gets old etc

This just resets itself when the iginitions turned off, nothing to worry about

I have what appears to be an electric motor noise, 53 TD4, when I turn the engine off, but leave the ignition on. I researched on here for the location of the FBH exhaust, from the three pics I have seen, it appears to exit on the passenger side, to the rear of the front wheel station. But I can't see an exhaust there, so who knows what it is..? I don't have any problems with it at the minute so I'm not bothered!

Lift the bonnet and have listern. I once had a faulty head light level motor, that ran constantly only when the head lights were powered. Also there's a fan that runs in the L shaped computer box, if the computers too hot, to cool it.

I know that one but its different to that :)

Now that's a possibility - I will check it out, thanks

if you have one the exhaust exit is in front of the left front wheel....

You were right :) the noise is from the o/s headlight, it doesn't do it all the time though, probably just easier to disconnect the motor.

When it happened to mine, I swapped over the level motors to prove it wasn't a fault in the wiring, as opposed to the motor. Car was new to me at the time. Motor sort of turns to release, but it still holds on via a peg. Peg slides out sideways somehow to release it all.
