I went out fishing for the first time this season tonight. Making my way down the river I come across this Nissan Mistral stranded in water :) I occasionally stumble across ****s stuck in holes down here and generally let them get on with the mess they've created themselves. Tonight though I was feeling much less grumpy than usual and thought I'd wander over and see if I could help them out.

When I get there, the engine on the Mistral is dead, so I'm immediately regretting going over as my 2WD Freelander is never going to get them out. Thankfully they were complete dicks and didn't have a rope. The rope I keep in the car was coiled up in the garage after lugging my SIII around. So I gave the guy a lift and carried on my way down the river for some more fishing :)

You can see from the wet stones that he's obviously hit that water at speed and taken his engine out. Dicks in trucks - 1 born every minute!

Wasn't there a military vehicle lost near there a few years ago?
I've not heard of that. The only military vehicle lost near here in recent years was one that went off the side of the Port Hills.

There were some guys fishing a couple of Ks down at the mouth when the quake struck. Their trucks sunk in the sand with the shaking.

The pool where that Mistral got stuck is one dug by outfits that extract the gravel (not sure if its for roading or building). They dig huge channels in the river bed that once the dust has settled, people swim in. Then one of the floods comes through and brings a few million tons of new gravel with it to mainly fill in the channels.

The river in the pic is the Waimakariri. For them's that don't know much about Kiwi braided rivers, in the pic its flowing at its normal rate of probably about 80 - 90 cumecs. A couple of times a year it will flood with rain from the Southern Alps (about 100KMs away) and will turn in about 1/2 an hour to (up to) 2,500 cumecs. Its a sight to behold, and all the gravel you see in the pic will turn into a raging torrent. You may not want to view the whole of this video, but click through a few minutes at a time. Note - its sunny in Christchurch, but 100KMs away its throwing it down!
