I'm sorry, but if I'm to believe what I've read in Land Rover Montly on page 26, the Dave Phillips column, who has said that he has it on great authority that the defender will lock stock and barrel be produced in India after 2015 (I'm not a marketing executive or in any way connected to LRM magazine) it's absolutely disgraceful.

The great and the good of the present board of Land Rover are going to ship off one of the greatest British icons to India? When it's becoming ever more iconic? It's too much to bare.... Surely there must be some way to produce it here.... Your thoughts please-to show the very very out if touch Land Rover fat cats that there about to make a mistake equivocal to selling your family silver to the rag and bone man.

Madness.... And strong sentiments for those 'modernists who don't know jack' to read and think about......

for rest of that part of the world. Emission and safety, and the lack of sales in the uk/eu has made it a unprofitable for TATA motors. Time for a new model to meet market demand.
 
Best thing that could happen, IMO. Defender is essentially hand-built, which makes it very expensive in the UK, and with the new emissions and safety regs it isn't going to be built here any more. By shifting production to a cheaper country with more sensible regs, it has a chance to live on - and I'm sure some enterprising soul will find a way to re-import them.

It will be like Royal Enfield motorbikes, except the parent company won't disappear

the utility lr allways did sell in low volumes and allways will but it is the icon that creates the name for the rest ,how many more versions of an evouqe do they need

All the while santana built under licence, iveco mastiff etc etc so like royal Enfield it will maybe be a good thing
 
When all's said and done, if it means that the Fender lives on for another 100 years, who cares where they are built?

Meant the beetle lived on for another 30odd years. During the time abroad was updated, fuel injection engine, better brakes etc as part of continual development albeit in a different country and slower.

I used to be a vw enthusiast - it meant that plenty of good quality genuine parts stayed available for a long long time, I am talking things like body panels etc

Me personally if the choices are:

- stop defender production completely in Europe and build it in India
- stop defender production everywhere

I am sorry but I would let the Indian chaps takeover.

The reason they stopped production of the beetle was new regulations in Mexico that required all taxis to have 4 doors. Killed of the beetle overnight. Pity. :crazy_driver:

It'll happen as soon as the marketing bods decide that people would still buy a land rover without the 'made in Britain' badge.

RR could save a fortune by building abroad but are clear that no one would buy a foreign built rolls.

Trouble is, I doubt that the general LR buyer is discerning enough.
 
Its a pity, but I agree I would rather see the Defender built abroad than just closed up.
It also means that spares will be available for next 70 years.

Sounds like a good idea to me.
Morris minors, and Enfield motorbikes, were made in India for years after they had ceased production in the UK

No, it's a disgrace in my book.

As others have mentioned, a drip, drip, drip of manufacturing from here to India will occur- no I'm not talking about in 5 years-we know that investments have been made at plants here, so for the foreseeable LR will be produced here. But if the defender becomes as Indian as curry, then the rest of LR will too in time.

I frankly am proud of this country's heritage-motoring and otherwise, and hate to see things unnecessarily go down the Swanee.

To all those nay sayers- it was born here, lives here and with a little help from the Drs could reside here for a long time yet.
