I have replaced the head gaskets for the second time using new gaskets and bolts each time. The first time I did it I was convinced I had not torqued the heads down correctly as it was blowing out more smoke than an Icelandic volcano.
So this time I used some Tipex (other brands are available) to mark the bolts. The liners have not dropped. So Im sure they are correct now. However it is still a hazard to aircraft.
So do I do it a third time or has anyone ever heard of the inlet manifold cracking or becoming wrapped in some way.

Decided to buy a compression tester, which I can pick up tomorrow as the parts shop did not have any in stock.
So £20 for the tester and at least it will show if it is a head gasket or both or something else, well I hope it will.

Hi Crossa,

Thanks for the reply, sorry but i dont know much about the p38 engine, i've got a L332 which i had very similar problems.

I am only in wallsend and dont mind coming to have a look and give you a hand if it's any help.

Bit of an update I ran the car for about 20mins last night and there was still steam coming out of the exhaust but not as much as the day before, but when I checked the water level this morning it was ok. So i'm going to run it today for a bit longer and see what happens but still test the compression.

So I left the car running for nearly 40mins today and it just kept on blowing white smoke out of the exhaust which got worse if I rev'd the engine. But when it cooled down it had not used any water, and from what I could tell it had not used any oil. There are what look like copper particles in the expansion tank so I suspect that the previous owner had used something to mask what they thought was head gasket fault.
I have the compression tester so I will see what that reveals but I may not be able to do that until the weekend.

If you have had a head gasket problem that you have now repaired you may have a residue of water in the exhaust which is just burning off as steam, drive it for a few days to see if it clears, if its not loosing water or pressurising then it shouldent do any harm...this sometimes happends...

Might have to change the exhaust anyway well at least the cats as I suspect they would not have taken kindly to being soaked in antifreeze.
So if the compression test does not show anything untoward (I really really hope it doesn’t) then I will take the exhaust off and use a blow torch to try and get rid of any lingering residue as I can’t drive the car as it has no MOT and I have sorn'd it

I have never had a head gasket damage the cats, just run the car it should clear, no need to remove the exhaust and heat it...most modern catalytc cars generate their own water by the way they run, My 4.0 steams like mad untill the exhaust gets hot...
