Still Got Issues - 300TDi

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the VERY thorough diagnosis/explaination :D

I must admit, I didn't know about the 'no throttle pedal' thing on the EDC's so that probably won't help.

You're right about the symptoms though. The only thing that confuses me is that the guy who checked the compression said it started initially from cold and ran fine for about a minute then started to play up as described. My first encounter with the problem was from cold? So it's definitely an intermittent fault I guess.

I did question the guy about the possibility that I may have moved some 'crud' around when I ran some injector cleaner through the tank, thought maybe I cleared some varnish/carbon that was stopping a worn injector dripping or something? But I'll see what the chap says when he sticks the PC on it.

That's starting to sound a bit like fuel starvation to me. If you have a spare fuel filter in stock, bob it on, it may help.

I get the sense that there are several small issues coming together to give you grief, rather than one big expensive problem.

Good luck and Happy Christmas

Dave

Thanks Dave,

I changed the fuel filter along with the air, and oil filters (and oil) around 1500 miles ago so they should be OK.

I'll let you know if and when it's sorted by posting here.

Thanks again and merry xmas to you too.

And... How'd it go? I have an EDC 300Tdi. Had it plugged in and discovered the astonishing cost of the fourth injector - the part the diagnostic pointed its electronic finger at. Not only are they extortionately priced at £225!!!, it also appears that Land Rover don't make 'em any more and they're getting hard to find. I've since spoken to an engineer/mechanic who works for an independant Land Rover specialist and he's outlined loads of problems associated with the EDC engines as they age. I've acquired a cable injector pump, the pipes to suit, a cambelt, idler and tensioner, an accelerator cable and a few other bits needed and will be joining forces with the aforementioned engineer/mechanic to retro-convert. It's costing about the same as the price of that infernal injector but should eliminate a heck of a lot of potential reliability/poor running issues. I'll let you know.

Hi Glugskiclumfum

Well....turns out that the pump isn't advancing when the throttle is pressed. The diagnostics showed 4 faults, 3 of which cleared but the 4th pointed to the engine speed sensor. I managed to remove the sensor (or at least part of it, as the body snapped off  ) so I now have to try and drill out the remainder but it's right against the bulkhead at the top of the torque converter casing so really hard to access!

I just hope that when I do manage to replace it the fault sods off!

I must admit though, I'm very interested in the conversion to non-EDC so let me know how you get on and where I can source the necessary parts.

Cheers,
JB

Well, it's been a looooooong time since I changed the sensor in the bell housing and I've been uber busy since travelling with work etc.

Anyhow, changed the sensor (11 hours in total !!!) and guess what?.....

......same damn fault!

So now I really am stumped, someone mentioned the throttle pedal unit (it's a fly-by-wire) but I really am getting desperate now :(

Any ideas guys?

get a small piece of clear fuel hose and fit it between the lift pump and fuel filter showed me i had an air leak which took a week to cure and has just started again :(
