Stiff steering

Hi,
I drove my newly bought 1993 200tdi about 80 miles today to clear out the cobwebs. After stopping briefly I got on my way home again, and the steering felt a little heavy almost as if I had a puncture, but no, no puncture. Do the power steering pumps pack up often on these models?

Lots of things it could be, there are so many links in the steering chain ..

First I'd check would be the belt tightness/soundness, UJ's on steering shaft, connections and linkages, tyre pressures, jack front wheels upand try to turn the steering, then have someone turn it while you're under watching and listening ... shed-loads to do before just swapping a pump ... and all most of it takes is time, unlike the pump!
