Hi. My freelander 2 has been off road for quite a while now due to having gear select issue's. I noticed the gears getting a little stiff then after a week I was having trouble getting it into mainly forward gears but also reverse. It would select fine for a while then start getting stiff causing me to move the stick around or in & out of other gears then it would go straight in but then I'd try to select another gear & have to start all over again. Garage said it's NOT the clutch & advised another gearbox. I thought that was extreme so any advice would be appreciated. (They changed gearbox oil last week but no better). Rob

Gear selection issues on a manual are normally clutch related, but can also be oil related, and sometimes dirt related.
Thanks nodge. I did have the gearstick gaiter off to replace & sometimes the knob lift's up abit so wondering if this would also cause problems. The local guy at garage was meant to re-set the reverse solenoid which sits at the base of the stick & to the left but he had other job's to sort so he could have forgotten. Would that be a cause? Thanks, Rob

I'm not aware of a solenoid on the bottom of the stick.
There's a mechanical decent to stop it going into reverse my accident, but I'm not aware of a solenoid.

Actually I think your right as I can remember reading that & because I couldn't hardly get reverse I asked the mschanic to pull it gently out a touch then after a couple of minutes push it back into place using a screwdriver due to it being at an awkward angle. So you don't believe this would be of any use for the forward gears?

Does it improve selection with the engine off?
If so I'd agree with clutch issues.
Your profile pic, did the RAC lean your wheel against the car??

Lol yes actually he did as car's where trying to pass. So you think I probably need a new clutch? It does go through all the gears ok when engine is off. Thanks for your help

Could be the clutch operating mechanism not disengaging the clutch completely.

Dunno if it is cable or hydraulic, I'm a FL 1 man!!

Thanks for your help. I'm sure my 08 f2 is hydraulic & had this discussion with my brother half hr ago. I did have a nice fl 1 in white for about 8yr's & sold it to my brother. Loved that motor & I'm pretty sure it was also hydraulic clutch. (i think). I honestly believe I'll have to replace the clutch with a clutch kit from eBay. Over 200k on clock but she still pull's like a train so she's worth spending the money on (but not too much) lol. I was just hoping it was a selector issue. Thanks again

If it selects gears ok with the engine off, then it's almost definitely the clutch dragging.
This can happen as the plate reaches the end of it's life. Sometimes the plate friction material can bow outwards, causing constant drag.
It's best to get it sorted ASAP, or it will damage the synchronisation rings in the gearbox.

I think your right. I'll buy the clutch kit & arrange to get it sorted asap. I can't use her like this anyway. Thanks for advice. I'll keep posting my progress. Rob

Hello again. Regarding my Stiff gear post I've had a land rover guy who's company fixes these problems & I'm sure most of you will know of him. He told me it will be the slave/master cylinder causing my fl2 issue's with stiff gears etc. I was ready to buy a clutch etc but now I'm abit unsure what to do. Any advice would be really helpful. Thanks, Rob

I did have a new slave cylinder fitted not too long ago (you'll read on on an old post), so wondering if maybe they didn't do it correctly.

The hydraulics could potentially cause the same dragging issue, but even if it was, the slave is in the gearbox (known as a concentric), so you might as well replace the clutch while the box is off the engine.
It's worth trying to bleed the clutch hydraulics, before committing to remove the gearbox.

Make's sense. I always assumed I couldn't bleed a hydraulic clutch. I had another engine put in my f1 by a mate & he had a big issue bleeding the clutch. Not sure how he managed it but it was ok after he did it. I'm not clued up mechanically so I'll need to find out how it's don't & I'll definitely try the bleeding b4 I do anything drastic. Thanks again bud. Appreciate your help. Keep you posted.

Just wondering if there's a difference in the clutch kits & how would I know if it's the correct match for my f2? Their on eBay for around £350-ish which includes the duel mass. (in assuming I'll need the duel mass). Any advise welcome. Thanks.
