The choke's got a bit sticky and now releasing the choke cable doesn't return the choke.

I've cleaned the choke cable/spring mechanism from gunk, and it's ok, but I think the choke linkage inside the carb is gunged up.

Is this an easy job or will I have to dismantle the carb?

well i have just picked up a 72 that has been retro fitted with SU's and not had the choke sorted/conected.

i am going to have a a crack tomorrow, will let you know what i find out!

usualy it is the linkage ball joints worn on the link rods check them or a fault with the choke butterfly poppet valves stuck

I removed the rods, and the shaft into the butterfly turned with some effort.

I'll take a look inside.
