Stereo Setp on a P38 HSE

Evening,
This '98 P38 HSE i bought has the harman Kardon setup (or so the speaker covers lead me to believe) i'm not realy bothered eitherway, BUT, i do have only one side of speakers working. The NS front is good, NS rear is Ok i think, Nothing from the OS rear and proper rubbish from the OS front.

I see on Ebay that people are selling the 'amps' for this system. Would my truck have these amps, and where would i find them? Once i know i'll get fault finding.

I couldnt tell you what headunit i have as i dont have a manual to distinguish the different types, but it is LR, has a tape deck and looks old. I dont supose these are known for crapping out of a few channels are they?

each door / speaker set has its own amp??

5 amps in total i think. 4 in the doors and one for the sub. but the speakers themselves are what are likely to have perished, for example if rainwater seeped in to them or something or the foam suspensions have torn or disintegrated. since you'll be taking the door cards off anyway, start there: take the working speakers and connect them in turn to each corner and see if it plays. the head unit can be removed and on the underside you'll find the make and model. either a clarion or an alpine would be my guess.

ps. if you've never taken the door cards off before, watch out for the "hidden" screw under the the tweeter enclosures on the front doors.

If its a 98 I think it is probably the Clarion - if you take a pic and upload it here, we'll be able to tell you. If its the Clarion you'll be in luck, it can be fully serviced and repaired locally for about £70 - the company used to advertise on ebay. If its the later, supposedly posher, Alpine unit, then you're not so lucky if it goes faulty on you - there are no more spares and service available unless you know an electronics wizard who can repair down to compnent level. The door amps and the rear (expensive) amp under the parcelshelf have a habit of dying. They are pricey but still available via main dealers. Beware of ebay amps as many are bombed out rubbish - buy from one of the trade sellers like partsrange (RFi's ebay store I think) and they'll be more expensive but at least they'll work. Be careful when fitting as they can blow quickly if inexpertly or incorrectly fitted. I think the sub amp is at the back near the CD changer, someone else may know for sure. Mine, touch wood, still sounds superb so haven't disturbed anything.

The sub amp sits on top of the Sub, remove that side panel where the CD changer sits and all will be revealed

cheers. wil have to get around to sorting this out. but tunes are the least of my worries......
