After looking through the search results, haven't been able to narrow down a diagnosis on the whine I get from my steering. This is a 200TDI conversion 90.
The noise has been developing

What I'm fairly certain off from searching is:
  • its a lack of fluid in the steering box
  • there is air in the power steering system
This is what state the 3 main components are in;
  • The steering box does have a slight leak but it isn't pouring out
  • The reservoir has fluid in it (I took the cap off and can see fluid in the filter/basket)
  • The pump - state unknown as not sure how to check this/what I'm looking for
I've tried turning the wheel from lock to lock repeatedly resulting in no change in the whining or the fluid level in the reservoir

A few working theories I have:
  1. The pump is fubar and the leak in the steering box has meant its simply run out of fluid with no new fluid getting to it (as the reservoir level doesn't appear to be changing
  2. The steering box leak is worse than thought and is simply drawing air rather than fluid

So, is trying to bleed the steering box worth trying?
How do I diagnose the state of the pump?

Any other ideas?

Try bleeding it, what have you got to lose?
In my PSF reservoir there is no filter/basket, just a little dipstick?
If you can easily turn the steering stationary with engine idling, the pump is probably working.

bleeding shouldnt help they self bleed box leak might lose fluid but wont cause air ingress that would have to be low fluid ie empty reservoir or pump sucking air through front seal, pump would be my suspect

Is it worth having a crack with a PAS Pump seal kit [STC1633] or am I just in denial/delaying the inevitable?

Mine turns easily with the palm of one hand on the wheel. But if james says the pump is knacked^^^^^^^, it probably is.

Think I have to give it some effort to move when stationary.

As it turns out I may actually have a 300TDi and not a 200 (it was converted before I bought it and this is my first landy  - there's only one belt on t'front o' t'engine) a new pump is suddenly £100 less expensive so I think I'll replace it.:)
