Wife wants a slightly smaller and thicker steering wheel for her 1974 petrol SWB Series 3.... I have seen a few on that well known auction site for mid late 1980s 90 land rovers - does anybody know if these will fit, or know what others will?

Thanks

...Bloody typical - spend ages searching through treads to find an answer and nothing appears... post a question and the next thread I look at tells me what I want to know - a 90 steering wheel will not fit a Series 3

Sorry for wasting your time!

i have a montaray steering wheel 13" which fits but you have to buy a boss for it, they sell them on ebay for about £20 ithink - you just need to know how many splines on the shaft. hope this helps

Without power steering it'll make it really hard to turn, particularly at low speed. They're that size for a reason. But a little foam padding and a leather cover might help make it thicker. Try the stuff they use for bike handlebars.

Found one from an old LDV van that fits perfectly.... little bit smaller in diameter (about an inch and a half overall) with nice thick rim and nice feel (plus looks right too). only problem was that it had two protruding lugs on the back and no holes for the indicator cancel thing to locate in; so I cut off the lugs from the back of the new wheel, I then drilled and put a couple of self tapping screws through from the rear of the indicator ring into the metal at the back of the LDV wheel to stop it spinning and let the prongs from the indicator ring just bury themselves into the foam on the back.
Now works a treat - Happy Days!

'ere you go ****ant...

As well as being slightly smaller diameter and fatter than the original, it is also not as dished, so gives a bit more room for those of us of a larger elk.. whilst still leaving enough room to not be knocking the indicator stalk all the time.

I have kept the original wheel - for those of you who get really upset about these sorts of things, but overall it makes a suprisingly large difference to driving comfort
