hiya

i recently fitted an updated steering wheel that has the radio controls on it.

Ive got a haynes manual but to be honest cannot really make heads or tails of it.

The cd player i got was a sony, got an adaptor so that one end plugs into the loom the other in the back of the sony.

Does anyone know where i can get a simple wiring diagram please to show me how to wire in the steering wheel radio controls in please

thanks

as always really appreciate your kind help

Hi Gary,
If you changed your wheel for one with Radio controls you will need to get several bits of kit sorted to get it all up and working.
1. the wheel has a small loom inside, under the airbag, to connect the switches to the coupler between the wheel and the column (should be already in place).
2. There is a set of wiring between the column and the interface unit (if you have one), I think that is located behind the centre console if I remember correctly.
You will need the switch interface unit that converts the switch signals into the radio control signals.
3. You will need the correct converter cable/unit to interface the standard set up with your particular head unit if you are not using a LR one.

This is an outline of the way it all connects up - you will find the descriptions and wiring diagrams in the Rave for you particular model.
How simple it is depends upon how much of the stuff is already in there and how much you have to find/source or adapt.
I had a similar problem to solve when I fitted the Cruise Control switches to mine and had to check out how the wiring was connected up and what to?
Take it slowly and double check with the Rave, if it still don't look right post back with questions. Others will have actually done this conversion - so will be able to answer the specific questions.

hiya

thanks so much for the informative email, i have ordered the following connector

Land Rover - Steering Wheel Control Interface, Stalk Control Adaptor

not sure if its going to work, but after you explanation i think i can see what i may need, i havent taken off the steering wheel cowl yet, didnt realise i needed to get into that.

hopefully the wires may be there in the loom,

i dont know if im right in saying but do they fit the same wiring loom to all the models and not make up individual ones.

was the CC very complicated to fit, as i would really like to do that, are you able to get the steering wheel controls

will look at the rave cd, by the way do i have to remove the steering wheel again to get the cowl off please

thanks again

yes, you shouldnt need to cut or change any of the original wiring at all !

just make sure your new head unit supports remote stalk controls and your ready to go.

mine was an alpine unit, so quickly hopped online and sourced a adapter to convert the freelander stalk plug into a mini jack plug which then plugs into the new head unit.

not a change in wiring at all !

changed the head unit in 15 mins! :D

thanks for the heads up.

i wasnt sure if it will work or not, got the adaptor and the fly lead you mentioned that plugs into the back of the radio, ive got a sony cd.

my concern was when i take off the steering wheel cowl whether the wires will be there that i need to plug into for the cd player.

i had a look on Rave found the electrical image rotary coupler number 47.trying to make sense of it.

hopefully once i take the cowl off it may make more sense

thanks again

Gary, If the wheel came with the switches fitted , the wiring should all be in place - don't need to take it off again.
If you did not have remote radio controls before you may not have the remote interface unit fitted.
If you already have the head unit adapter cables - try them first if it works then you have the interface. If not you may need to fnd out if you have one fitted or get one installed.

As for Cruise Control - yes there are differeces in the looms and yes you will end up cutting and remaking wiring to get an aftermarket system working. Don't think it's practical to retrofit a factory system without the co-operation of a dealer with a testbook and the knowlege to reprogram the ECU even if you do manage to source and fit all of the LR parts required.

hiya guys

wished to update you, i fitted the wiring loom and followed the instructions as you have to follow a sequence before plugging in the remote lead in the back of the radio

i also had to put in the sony wiring loom that i originally bought for it.

well after all that it worked a treat, so now the steering whell controls work fine.

if it helps my freelander was originally a commercial 3 door van type and i converted it by putting in the rear seats, panels and rear windows, so if anyone else wishes to fit the steering wheel controls that the wiring is all there in the loom

cannot thank all of you enough which lead me to search for the correct wiring loom, bless you

all the best

gary
