The grease monkeys told me the tie rod ends and all that seems to be OK. But the steering wheels has lots of play; I can turn it probably 30 degrees before getting any response. Someone told me, the power steering pump might be responsible, though I can't imagine how this may be. So how bad should steering be normally and how bad is what I got?

Can't find it on youtube, but over here we had a tv programme - wheeler dealers. They bought a disco and replaced the steering box for a similar steering issue as you have.

play will be either track rod ends or loose drop arm or box ,rock uj just before box and see what play box has, it is adjustable ,but dont unless you read how to first
