Hi all,
I'm new to the forum but I've had my trusty Freelander for four trouble free years and my Disco before this. I have a problem at the moment with the steering wheel lock, sometimes when I try to start the car the steering wheel lock doesn't come off, I have to disconnect the battery to reset it and then it works fine for a few days. I'm wondering if it works off a solenoid or something similar that's sticking - do any of you good people have an idea what could be causing it please?

I take it this is a Freelander2.

If so weak batteries are known to cause this and I believe there may be a software update you can get which eases the problem. Think there may be a few other causes.

Thanks Grumpy,
The better half has a Jaguar XF that's just had 200 quids worth of battery, when she's busy I'll swap them over and see how it goes - she'll never notice !0)

There was a problem with the power release mechanism of the steering lock. I'm sure it was corrected at some point in production, or had a software update. However the power release isn't much different to how to release a normal key type lock, where sometimes the wheel can need a juggle to free it off. Lots of modern keyless vehicles flash a message on the dash, requesting the wheel be moved, so the locking pawl can release.
