but now i cant seem to get the steering wheel aligned with the road wheels.

we have taken the universal joint off the box and moved the steering wheel central and loked the wheel but its still not quite right

You correct the steering wheel to centre by altering the length of the drag link, the bar that connects the drop arm off the steering box to the nearside wheel hub.
At each end of the drag link, round tube about 25mm dia, you will find a clamp, undo clamps and rotate the drag link tube which ever way centres the steering wheel.
Thats the theory , in practice the drag link tube will be corroded in place.
Probably need lots of heat and release oil and stilsons if you are lucky and can get it to rotate. If not it usually means taking the whole bar off the car and freeing it off on a bench.

landyadam,
Could I add further to the good advice that you have received. Prior to adjusting the drag link, make sure the your steering wheel is indeed aligned to the centre position of the steering box. This is easily done on a disco as the steering box drop arm has an aligning slot cast into it so when the steering box is in the central position this slot aligns with a hole drilled in the steering box casing. From memory I think you need an 8mm diameter pin (bolt).
Good luck with your repair

Mine's at about 10 o'clock with the wheels ahead. Been like that since I got it and it annoyed me for about 5 minutes. Then I got used to it and wouldn't have it any other way now.
