Steering Shake - Aaaarrrgghhh!!

Hi Peoples,

Got a *bad* dose of the steering shakes. Tried the following .....

1. Steering box play adjusted
2. Trackrod ends replaced
3. Steering damper replaced

It's *still* as bad as ever!! Anything over 50mph, hit a bump mid-corner and the steering wheel goes into a humongous shimmy, and of course the rest of the van follows suit!

Where's my next port of call? I thought I'd covered all the bases.

Bushes? Which ones?

Hey Dude's,

Just got a call from the Garage. Took earlier advice to get the bushes checked, and my mechanic says they are all sound as a pound. He did find that one of the wheels was out of balance ... but that wouldn't cause the steering shake that I'm experiencing.

Any more ideas guys ... I'm fresh out!!

To recap:

I get a bad steering shake, only experienced at speeds over 50/60, particularly bad in bends if you hit a rough patch of road or a pothole. If the roads are smooth, then no shakey even in bends.

Had a trackrod end replaced, the steering box free play trimmed, and the steering damper replaced.

Mate, it will be the swivel pin..I bet the pre-load is wrong...pretty easy job to do.......if you want any more info PM me.
 
There is a thing called the panhard arm, it may be loose, mine was and did the same thing. Under the car on the driver's side (US) under the power steering resivoir a short arm drops down to a longer arm that extends to the other side ( slopes down, the whole set-up is asymetrical) the bollt assembly that holds the two arms together can get loose and cause steering shake especialy right after bumps. Tighten the bolt and you should be good to go.
