Hi All,

I'm in the process of overhauling by power steering box on my 1996 Discovery 1 300Tdi. I've replaced the sector shaft bearing in the housing. Does anyone know what the specified diameter of the sector shaft is. Mine measures 31.65mm. My calculations based on the bearings is that it should be 31.73mm (bearing ID is 31.75mm).

I've been advised hard chroming or steel spray will peel off so I've found a place (In Johannesburg, South Africa) that can weld it back to spec (Applied Welding, www.appliedwelding.co.za). I just need to confirm that 31.73mm is indeed the correct spec?

I'd be very surprised if reclaimation welding of such a component as a sector shaft would be a good idea. As a major component of the steering a lot depends on it and the heat of welding could cause a fracture failure of the shaft in service, I'd be asking for a full metallurgy test report on the repaired shaft, welding can radically alter the grain structure.
Hard chrome applied by a reputable reclaimation company would be a good way to go but can have it's problems, but properly applied it's near better than new, because of it's surface hardness.
If it is so badly worn it might be worth trying to get hold of a new or good used steering box, but of course that avenue may not be available to you because of geographic location.
