Hi
So, after a few lockdown weekends worth of jacks, club hammers, mallets, PlusGas, crowbars, blow torches, mini hacksaw blades, mini files and coffee, I have finally removed the steering relay from my wife’s 77 S3. The relay is damaged beyond repair - it has a hole at the bottom of the internal body, about as big as a fingernail, that looks like a crater and through which you can see one of the screw holes for the bottom end cap. Unfortunately, along with the relay itself, the tube in which it normally resides inside the chassis came out with it - it is partially disintegrated near the top and solidly rusted to the relay body. So, I now have a relay sized hole with no tube...

My question is, does anyone know if it is possible to source a replacement tube that can be welded into place? I’ve not managed to find any despite numerous searches and I am beginning to think I may need to have one fabricated.

Thanks

You can buy just the crossmember:

I would fit a new crossmember, I would not repair just the tube. There is likely to be more internal corrosion and you may have a lot of trouble getting to good metal, also as its steering it all has to be lined up. The crossmember is much easier welds as its all external and it will be easy to line up. I suspect you can't get the tube because if the tube's gone the crossmember is gone.
