Dudes

When the engine is off there is at least a cople of inch of play in the steering wheel

When driving the steering is a little vague too?

Why would there be play when engine is not running and how would you diagnos the prOblem I have please?

Scott

if wheels straight you should have little or no lay you will do in either lock or part lock ,engine on /off makes no difference its power assisted steering, nut and screw on top can be adjusted to remove freeplay

Check the uj's on the steering shaft fur any play. Also check all ball joints and steering damper rubbers before resorting tae the steering box;)

Thanks buster,

How will I know if the ujs have gone on the steering shaft? Will it be obvious if they have 'play'?

Aye, just take hold of it and give it a guid wigglin';)
just a wee after thought, does yer box leak (or any of the pipes or pump) ??

No mate, no leaks up to now touch wood!

Iv had a quick look at the steering shaft but not as easy to reach as the defender was lol:eek:

That'll teach ye fur goin' fur a lesser model!:p:p:p:D
Ah'd still be tempted tae check all yer ball joints up front tho'.. and also check the bolts holding yer steering box tae chassis are torqued up proper like. IF it comes tae settin' the screw on top o' the steerin' box, don't over do it as ye might be lookin' fur a new box sooner than later!!;):D

Cheers buster will look at it tomorrow, I'll let ya know my findings, hopefully a UJ :)

Just an update on the steering wheel play!

The steering shaft UJ's are fine.
Drop arm ball joint has no grease nipple, but has no play what so ever.
All the rest of the ball joints have no play in them and all look as they should.
No leaks from steering box.

Jamesmartin, you are right about the wheels being straight and having no play! When i got the two inch or so of play I must have had a bit of lock on the steering , when my wheels are straight there is o play like you say. So thanks for that mate! ;)

Thanks to Buster too for the pointers, much appreciated mate! ;)
